Literature Device Short Story
Once upon a time, a baby girl was born whose name was Hazel. Hazel was born with bright blue, curious eyes, silky blonde hair, rosy and dimpled cheeks, and a smile that could reach across the ocean. She filled up the room with joy and her parents could not have been more delighted. Since her parents were the most respected, smartest people in town, it was a known fact Hazel would grow up to be just like them.
Hazel’s brightly lit future took a detour when her parents brought her home from the hospital. She turned out to be a rather fussy baby. She was always crying, screaming, hyper, and very needy. Her parents could barely keep up with their jobs at the Naturgua University, teaching math and taking care of Hazel, so they hired a nanny.
The nanny did the best she could to teach Hazel how to talk, so Hazel could start off smarter than other babies. Hazel couldn’t pick up on anything. Feeling hopeless, the nanny tried teaching the hyper baby how to walk. Hazel just kept on giggling while rolling and sliding into flexible positions on the floor. At the end of each day, the nanny would give the same report back to Hazel’s mom and dad. “She is still low-functioning and doesn't pick up like the rest of the children do”, the nanny would say.
Hazel’s mom and dad could not figure out how their smart genes had made a low-functioning child. Weeks went by and all the other children began saying their first words. Hazel started crawling, but wouldn’t say anything. More weeks went by and the other children starting forming sentences and crawling. Hazel started walking, but she kept on falling down and tripping over herself. Hazel’s parents decided to stop worrying about her and agreed to give her a year or two to develop and assess her later.
When Hazel turned four she could speak, but not as well as the other children. Her handwriting was messy and she stuttered when she read aloud. Not only were her academics on the low end, but she was a very clumsy and hyper child. Hazel would trip over herself and fall on the floor a lot when she ran too fast. She liked to spend her time rolling through splits and doing jumps high up in the air.
Her parents couldn’t take it any longer and had to know what was wrong with her. They took Hazel to a doctor, but the doctor didn’t seem to be too surprised. He diagnosed Hazel as a dancer.
“There is nothing else I can say”, the doctor said, “She is hyperactive and flexible.”
Hazel's parents were immediately concerned.
“What should we do?” the mom said.
“We can’t tell anyone, it will ruin our reputation,” the dad replied.
From that day on, the parents used their knowledge and the university’s science lab to come up with potions and medicines that could help their daughter.
One night, they decided to combine different ingredients in a pot and boil it over medium heat. It had been a long day and both of them were tired, so neither of them caught the mistake they had made. One of the ingredients put in the pot was galaxy powder. Galaxy powder is a very dangerous substance, because it can take you to any planet you dream about. Sometimes if your thoughts get off track, you can wind up in a very dangerous place. The powder had been outlawed, but Hazel’s parents never got rid of their’s and kept it hidden in a flask labeled differently.
Hazel was fed that medicine, but no one knew what was really in it or what would come in Hazel’s dreams, in the future. They kept on having Hazel drink different medicines, but nothing seemed to work. They were puzzled that they couldn’t find a cure.
After hard work and still not finding a cure the mom said, “We wanted her to overachieve at something. It’s okay if it’s not school or something academic. We need to view this differently and think our daughter was born with a gift, not a disease.”
The dad agreed with her and they gave up making medicines.
At age five, Hazel started dance lessons. The whole town was very surprised that Hazel’s parents would let her take dance lessons instead of focusing on her academics.
Once Hazel started dance lessons, she couldn't stop. She kept on asking her parents to take more classes of different styles. She was in love in dance. Her parents were grateful that Hazel found her passion, but they were still upset her passion couldn't have been academics like theirs were.
She started taking hip-hop, contemporary, lyrical, ballet, tap, modern, acro, improv, and technique classes. She spent almost all of her time taking dance classes and when she wasn't dancing, Hazel was making up new dance moves and styles on her own.
By Hazel's freshman year of high school, she was better than her dance teachers. The entire town knew her as the best dancer in town. She influenced people with her dance moves and got them to feel what she was feeling. She was so good, her emotions and purpose got through to her audience.
Her parents could not be more proud. Their daughter became an artist. The entire town, including her parents, deeply appreciated what Hazel had become and loved watching her dance. Even with all the great attention, Hazel still had a hole in her heart she wanted to fill.
Hazel got bored of all the styles that she had mastered. She wanted to explore and learn new styles of dance.
“But how?” she would say to herself, “There's no one else that could teach me.”
Hazel went to sleep that night thinking about how much she wished she could learn new styles of dance. That night she had a dream that would change everything.
Hazel ended up dreaming a reality. The galaxy dust that was fed to her when she was an infant started buzzing alive. As she went to bed she could feel her body getting excited instead of getting tired. When she opened her eyes, She was not in her room anymore. She was not even in on her planet.
Hazel was on the planet of Multi-Movement. She had never seen a place like it. The ground was entirely made up of sheet vinyl, the perfect floor to dance on. All around her were creatures of different shapes and sizes dancing styles that she never had seen before. They were nice creatures; many greeted her and said hello. She couldn’t help herself from being freaked out a little bit.
Hazel finally gathered up enough courage and asked one of the foreign creatures, "Where am I?"
The creature said, “You are on the planet Multi-Movement”
Hazel then replied “What is the planet of Multi-Movement? I've never heard of it!”
The creature said, “My name is Saharah. What is your name and what do you dance?"
Hazel kindly said, “My name is Hazel and I dance many different styles. What do you dance?”
Saharah said, “My movement is called wavenaff. On this planet everyone knows a different style of dance and we are here to teach each other."
“Please teach me!” Hazel said excitedly.
“I would be glad to, just come back here everyday for lessons”, Sahara said.
Hazel would go to the planet every single night until she mastered Saharah's dance style. It was a piece of cake to her, picking up different styles. Every morning she would go back into her normal world and show her parents and friends the new dance style she had learned. They were all mesmerized.
Hazel grew up to be a dance instructor. All the little boys and girls would look up to her and they all wanted to dance just like her. Hazel opened up her own dance studio. It became very successful and many people came to get taught basic and unique styles. She visited her friends from the other world every night and continued learning different styles of dance from them. Her parents were beyond proud of her and everyone lived happily ever after.
